From Lake City, head north on Highway 149 for 11 miles. Look for the Alpine Plateau sign (FS Road 868); turn left onto this gravel road. Go about 10 miles on FS 868, until you will see the driveway for the Big Blue Campground.
FS Road 868 is narrow and very curvy, with switchbacks, for the first few miles. |
On the Big Blue
Near the terminus of the Big Blue Creek scenic drive, the Big Blue Campground is in a beautiful valley location and is close to public fishing access on Big Blue Creek.
It is also near the border of the Uncompahgre Wilderness Area, and close to several trails, including the Big Blue Creek trail, Ridge Stock Driveway, and the Alpine Trail. It is located about 21 miles from Lake City, Colorado. Elevation is 9800 feet. IMPORTANT: this campground is not recommended for large trailers or large RVs due to the tight turns and narrowness of the first few miles of the road to Big Blue. View in a larger map |
